How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn?
Learn how mowing frequency changes with grass growth, weather, and the season, and how to find the right routine for your lawn.
It Depends on How Fast Your Grass Grows
There's no single schedule that suits every lawn. Grass type, weather, rainfall and the time of year all change how quickly it grows.
During the main growing season most lawns look best with a cut every 7 to 10 days. In cooler months growth slows and every two to three weeks is usually enough.
Simple Rule
Never Remove More Than a Third.
The most useful guideline is to remove no more than a third of the grass height in one cut. Taking off more stresses the grass and can leave the lawn looking pale and patchy.
If the lawn has grown long, bring it down gradually over two or three visits.
A Seasonal Guide
- Spring Growth picks up quickly; mow weekly once the lawn is actively growing.
- Summer Raise the cutting height slightly and mow every 7 to 10 days.
- Fall Keep mowing while the grass grows, then reduce the frequency.
- Winter Mow only when needed and avoid cutting frosted grass.
